Michigan Fishing
Michigan is the
Great Lakes State and the great fishing state. For fishermen, who like fishing on the big waters,
charter fishing excursions are available on
Lakes Erie, Huron,
Michigan, and
Superior. There is nothing like leaving the land behind and spending the day on a charter craft in one of the Great Lakes fishing for
Lake Trout,
Whitefish, or
Chinook. The thrill of landing a 25 pound Chinook cannot be beaten! For
anglers, who like river, either from a bridge, riverbank, or canoe, and lake fishing. Many anglers prefer to troll on the quiet lake waters at dawn or dusk when pan fish like
bluegills and
sunfish are biting. Michigan has something for everyone, including bass,
perch,
Northern Pike, and
Walleye. Mancelona celebrates the opening of bass season with an annual festival.
Both Peninsulas boast quick moving trout streams for the
fly fisherman.
Outfitter can provide flies appropriate for daily conditions or teach fisherman to tie their own flies.
Fishing and canoeing guides are available for the
Au Sable and are known to show their favorite spots for trout. When the lakes and rivers freeze, fishing in Michigan gets more exciting because its cold winters provide long
ice fishing seasons. Some Michiganders prefer eating fish caught in the winter because the meat seems firmer. Ice fishermen and their friends and families celebrate their favorite sport at
Tip-up Town on
Houghton Lake for two weeks in January.
Michigan celebrates fishing and its contribution to tourism by having a week-end when
no fishing licenses are required.
